The World Court’s ruling that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal rewards growing judicial activism by states of the Global South.

As the US invasion of Iraq, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s indiscriminate and disproportionate onslaught on Gaza demonstrate, however, it is also often the most powerful nations that violate the most important principles of international law.

    I hope we see Israeli leaders in chains during my lifetime. But I’m not naive enough to be optimistic about it.
