“As a Linux user…”

Yeah yeah, you’re right. But can you maybe shut up about it for just a minute?

You’d see that a lot on Reddit, on subs like r/pcmr or r/gaming. But not much of that here, presumably because Lemmy has a higher ratio of FOSS-friendly folks.

No not really no. This doesn’t happen. Not even remotely close to as often as Linux users say Linux

I’m not even saying Linux users should say it less, I’m fine with whatever, it’s just that this isn’t true at all

This happened with XP, 7, and 8.1. 10 wasn’t bad either at first, but they’ve gradually enshitified it. 10 now and 11 are spyware masquerading as an OS.

As a Windows user, just keep your Apple away from me. I can’t do shit with it. My wife stepped away while we were zooming with someone the other day, and the Mac got pulled to another desktop (or something). I had no clue what to do. Apparently, it’s a three-finger swipe on the trackpad, because of course it’s a three-finger swipe.

I don’t care much about what other people are comfortable in using, but please don’t expect tech support from me. Every time I have to use Windows I get frustrated at how it forcibly feeds me stuff I don’t want. Although I admit that sometimes I joke to people to switch to Linux when they get frustrated with Windows as well, but that’s about it.

And also, some popular memes about Linux are probably just that, memes. Don’t take it too seriously.

The force feeding of news and shit is fucking enraging! Why on earth did they start pushing that, and why is it so hard to turn off? Why do they turn it back on at every opportunity? I have a Surface Pro that I use for digital painting. I’ll be happily just painting along when I misclick the system notification area and all of the sudden “Trump! Trump! Trump! Outrage! Doom! Gloom! Global catastrophe!” gets shoved in my face. I’ll open a fucking browser if I want to see the news. Ugh! Fuck off! That’s honestly a huge part of the reason I finally switched to Linux as my primary OS.

Try going to a Linux community and telling them for what reason you wouldn’t use Linux in a specific case or to whom you wouldn’t recommend Linux. You’ll quickly see a lot of responses that aren’t just memes.

what do you think the money you spend on beans is used for? but after you give it to the same stores I do, it’s not your money any more and you don’t get to decide what happens to it any more than I do.

based on your comments, you’re probably just a troll, buy just in case, here’s a really simple explanation.

so i buy beans from a store. the store has fewer beans, so they buy more from the company that sells them. i don’t buy meat, so that is one less meat product that they have to restock. therefore, instead of giving my money to the meat industry, they give it to the bean industry. on a small scale, that obviously makes no difference, but if enough people stop buying meat, less meat will be produced, which leads to fewer animals being tortured.

hey i didn’t say you are a troll, just that you probobly are one. and yeah, it’s true that they can do what they want with any money they get, but what they will do is use it to replace the things that people buy. otherwise, people stop buying things from them.

the store gets to decide what to do with their money and they can choose to take the bean money and stock up on hotdogs for labor day.

i doubt they’ll run out of beans. they probably already bought enough for the year on contract. same with the hotdogs, too, for that matter.

some factory farms are torturing animals. depending on your definition, not all are, but the ones that remove pigs’ tails and castrate calves without sedatives are definitely torturing them.

they’re not torturing them. they’re not being cruel for cruelty’s sake. The point isn’t the pain. The pain is incidental. it’s not torture.

But for real? Linux is actually so great. I’m running a shitty old PC as a media server and learning Linux as I go. It’s so light and nimble compared to a Windows machine. For anyone considering Linux, I highly recommend trying it out even if it’s just for funsies.

I never tell people I am a linux user.
I tell them I use Kubuntu.

Telling someone, you love drinking pop is unhelpful,
Telling someone how obsessed you are about drinking MOUNTAIN DEW*, is way more informative.

FYI: I rarely ever drink pop.

It’d only be out of support by then if they don’t release new updates. Not to mention the versions with longer life.

Linux Mint is pretty good, it has a Windows 7 kind of feel to it. Fedora is also nice, it great for tablet, also with touch. Both work pretty well and consistently out of the box.

Pop!_OS is the absolute best for beginners. Pick KDE if you want a Windows experience and Gnome if you want a Mac experience.

      Kubuntu

Debian based so most googling / instructions will include ones that work for you. Comes with a KDE desktop that is heavily customizable but also very good out of the box.

Pop OS is good if you want to game and don’t want to bother figuring out how to set up your drivers.

Depends a lot on use case, certainly!

Also, do you like a “bottom up” or “top down” approach? Grabbing a raspberry pi and setting up a headless (no monitor) home server is a great bottom up way of getting familiar with things — learn to configure various services and whatnot from the command line. Or, just start with a user-friendly distro with a GUI you like, and gradually work your way up to looking under the hood.

I wouldn’t say it is “Year of the linux desktop!” But I do think eventually it will take up much more of the market of OS use. Maybe years and years away.

Linux has come a very long way. I found it is actually easier in many ways to Mac and Windows, more complicated in others.

For general use, and even gaming, it’s actually in a really good state for general users right now.
