Edit: Cambodia, as a socialist project, was salvageable, until Pol Pot and his reactionary pro-peasant faction decided to override and purge the pro-Soviet and Viet-aligned factions of the Communist Party, and inevitably decided to cause war against Vietnam, in 1977-1979, in order to ‘return’ to ‘primitive communism’
