I feel like a bit of it might also just be Nintendo’s interpretation of “competitive”, too.
It seems like they usually go for simplifying maps/external stuff, where I think both competitive and casual play can improve with the increased variety (nix the things that hurt and/or stall gameplay, too, though), at least most of the time.
