No surprises here. Just like the lockdown on iPhone screen and part replacements, Macbooks suffer from the same Apple’s anti-repair and anti-consumer bullshit. Battery glued, ssd soldered in and can’t even swap parts with other official parts. 6000$ laptop and you don’t even own it.

but hostility towards repair, along with planned obsolescence, ended up turning me off

It’s funny you mention these, because Apple are one of the best in terms of “planned obsolescence” due to how long they support their devices both through software and through customer support/hardware support. An iPhone will easily last you 6+ years, getting the latest OS updates the whole time. Easily. No other phone on the market will. None.

There are two sides to that depending how bothered you are about updates.

Yes they support them with updates for, actually 5 years typically before considering them “vintage”, so they’re better that way. However you’ll find after about 2-3 years as the updates roll in, your iPhone mysteriously slows down. This is the planned obsolescence I’m talking about. They also did it with the Intel Macs - my 2017 one mysteriously slowed to a crawl (meanwhile Windows runs like a dream on it) the moment the first M1 supporting update came out. Very convenient.

If your view on whether a device is usable is based on whether it’s getting software updates then sure.

On a more practical level, people keep their Android phones going for 6+ years but without them being crippled. The software stops being updated after 2-3 years but this also means they stay usable and don’t get bogged down.

So have I. In fact I’m typing this from one that’s coming up on 2 years old while my wife’s is coming up on 4. Both still run like the day they were bought.
