It isn’t that you can’t be a moral person and a god-fearing one, it is just more difficult. Sometimes when I know a religious person who makes a real effort to help people I just want to yell at them “think of how much more you could do if you aren’t arguing with your imaginary friend all the time”.
I argue it’s easier. How can you be morally upstanding if you’re only doing it either because you fear god or you doing it for yourself, for your benefit in the afterlife?
