    Which is absolutely sad.

    Prison should be a place for rehabilitation, with the goal of returning them to society better than when they entered. But prison, at least in the US, is more a place to lock away and punish undesirables. I’m 100% against the death penalty and would prefer to spend our tax dollars trying to rehabilitate even those we deem “unredeemable,” they’ll be locked up anyway, we might as well give them a realistic shot of becoming positive members of society.

      prison, at least in the US

      Yeah, US prisons are particularly horrific for an otherwise well-developed country. Some of the Scandinavian countries (Norway?) do prison way better.
