I know I’m not in trouble, but I do feel bad that I’m probably the reason blahaj.zone will defederate with hexbear. I just thought they had an insane take on what hexbear was and posted it in the_dunk_tank. I included a link because I am not a LIB

but also I am a LIB and so are all of you and I’m sorry for that as well.

Yea, I’m not sure where it’s coming from because I haven’t seen it. I also linked to the Hexbear code of conduct and highlighted the first two rules.

Tbh, I was not sure about Hexbear when federation started, but I never got the impression that anyone was bigoted or racist. Like there’s literally all the pride hexbear icons, right?

I feel like these comments are either intentionally malicious or intentionally ignorant assumptions.

Sorry to off-topic interject here, but due to the flurry of whatever you posted in your comment, I figured it might be an ok place to ask.

I’ve been interacting with hexbear a decent amount since y’all federated, and the images don’t work on my app (for example whatever you posted above came through for me as a series of partial image slices stacked on top of each other, and in-line gifs/images make the comment they are in completely unreadable).

Do any of you use apps/pwas (I know hexbear was here before they really existed, so might be a long shot), and if so, which ones actually display hexbear content properly?

Sorry, I don’t use an app. I just use the Firefox app feature of making a website into a dedicated app.

Do other instances display images properly? I think the way our emotes are supposed to work like inline images do across lemmy, but I might be wrong.

They do, in that there’s an image link, but the content is properly shifted around it so it can be read.

Hexbear content also gives the image link (tho your comment above seems to have combined them all into one link), but the comment around it gets partially hidden and garbled. I’ve heard your gifs are really big, that may be why?

Either way, this app doesn’t have direct messaging and doesn’t handle a lot of stuff well, like multiple image posts, so looking for other options. Since hex seems to be the most problematic presently (no offense intended, ofc 😜) I figured I’d start with something that works for y’all, if I can find it.

Woof, I downloaded -every iOS app- (plus the pwa I was using before the apps were available) and loaded your comment to see if it worked and I understand now what people mean when they say your images are really big 😅 it took a lot of scrolling to get back to this. So yeah, hopefully that gets fixed lol

On a side note, because I asked and now have something of an answer, and I’m a good information citizen:

Lemmios and thunder seem to… work…. Slightly better… I can read the content around the giant pics, so that’s a drastic improvement. Of the two, thunder is more reasonably sized, so I’ll be using that for a while. (Voyager and wefwef make each image a unique text link, but don’t render them, Mlem gives a broken link indicator, and I couldn’t figure out how to get back here on liftoff, so dud anyway. I also tried bean, but it just tried indefinitely to load them, and the app I was getting garble with was memmy)

That’s good to know! Thunder is the only one I’ve briefly tried out and it seemed nice, but I immediately missed the color scheme of hexbear lol. I got too used to it.

Yes, I’m on Memmy too and many hexbear comments are unreadable due to emote images preview/links going on top of the text. I’m going to try Thunder, thanks for asking the question and doing the research!!

some people here definitely use mobile apps but I’m not one of them… once the PR goes through to fix federated emoji CSS that our devs put together then the standard web UI should show them correctly on any instance, but until then they’re going to be big.

If your app is showing them not just big but also mangled like you describe you may want to put in a bug report with the developer though.

I have put in a report, but this app handles other things very poorly as well and doesn’t have direct messages at all, so I’m looking for a change anyway :)

I assume they were mangled because there were so many in a row (it looked like a lot of them anyway), which caused the app to create a single image link for them rather than trying to render them.

I think it’s the inverse of conservatives who believe they aren’t racist while doing, saying, and believing racist things. They were provided a liberal (in the classical ideological sense) education that told them racism is bad but didn’t delve too deeply into self criticism. So now conservatives and liberals know racism is bad, but not really how to understand or identify it. So you get conservatives who steadfastly believe they aren’t racist because they don’t think they’re bad, and liberals who label things they don’t like as racist because it’s one of the most bad things they can think of.

I agree, it seems like a lot of liberals have the attitude of "I can’t be racist, because I’m not

But they still have the attitude that racism is an individual problem, “A few bad apples” rather than a systemic one. So when they see individuals here doing they conclude that those people must be racist against whites.
