The issue of sexual violence cuts across geographic, economic, and cultural boundaries, a new UNICEF report has found. If verbal and online abuse are taken into account, the number rises to 650 million victims.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released a report on Thursday which showed that one in eight girls is affected by rape or sexual assault before the age of 18. This amounts to some 370 million girls worldwide.
“Sexual violence against children is a stain on our moral conscience,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement. “It inflicts deep and lasting trauma, often by someone the child knows and trusts, in places where they should feel safe.”
UNICEF’s report also highlighted the issue of what is called “non-contact” forms of sexual violence, which includes online and verbal abuse. When this kind of violence is taken into account, the number of girls affected rises to 650 million, or one in five.

Talk to women in your life. 100% of the women I’ve ever spoke to on any level near this topic expressed a story of a degree of sexual violence or assault or intimidation.
I as a boy also experienced sexual assault as a child.
This is the most severe issue plaguing our society I think. I don’t know what it is but we have a problem. I’d bet 90% of the population has experienced sexual trauma. Shit is fucked bro.

If we’re including “online or verbal abuse,” I’m pretty sure that every single person, regardless of gender, is affected by that.
There’s been some progress on addressing these issues, especially when it’s targeted towards children. But until we actually really go after the perpetrators and the enablers, it will continue. No more normalizing these actions or dismissing it for the sake of the persons “career” or some other bullshit. This should not be ok, under any circumstances.
There’s also an issue in that, not so rarely, persons in positions supposed to make sure kids are safe, are abusers themselves.
I would say this is even a big part of why things don’t go faster in favor of REALLY making sure kids are safe.
