There was a thread on ResetEra where people shared games that say the title of the game out loud on startup.
I’ve created a playlist on @questlog@mstdn.games with every suggestion from that thread that had video proof attached (+ a few more):
#retrogaming #gaming
we need to bring back this trend
we need to add it to websites too. multiple times a day, a deep, supercool voice should boom 'WIKIPEDIA’ from your laptop speakers
@retrohistories@digipres.club @questlog@mstdn.games Reading this post I immediately blurted out “BEE SEVENTEEN BAAWWWMBER” and was glad to find it as the first item in the list ^^
@retrohistories @questlog Ooh, I’ve got a fantastic obscure one for you: Thieves’ Guild, a BBS game for the Atari ST with an amazing front-end client.
Here’s a video showing the intro:
https://vimeo.com/111651685And here’s an in-depth blog post about my 7-year effort to play the game and reach its ending:
https://breakintochat.com/blog/2020/09/15/thieves-guild-memories/@kirkman@digipres.club @questlog@mstdn.games oh, this is a good one! Couldn’t find a way to add it to the playlist — it’s not in IGDB, so you weren’t kidding about obscure — but hopefully it’ll be there someday. Thanks!
@retrohistories@digipres.club @kirkman@digipres.club You could add it to the IGDB yourself and when it’s approved it will be in Questlog.
I really should add an option to submit missing games. The IGDB is quite incomplete sometimes.
@retrohistories@digipres.club @questlog@mstdn.games Do Quadrun and Open Sesame for the Atari 2600 count? I don’t own them, so I’m not sure when they speak. It looks like Quadrun probably only does it when you hit reset to start a game, but Open Sesame seems to speak on startup.
https://youtu.be/73uqChqot-k?si=922R1ifOreQiOUhQ@EclecticLee@digipres.club There are already a couple in the list that only say the name when you pick an option from the startup menu — if you ask me, that’s just a different kind of ’says name on startup’.
Added both, thanks!
@retrohistories@digipres.club @questlog@mstdn.games Myth does this at least on the C64.
@cobbpg@mastodon.gamedev.place added, thanks!
@retrohistories@digipres.club @questlog@mstdn.games Kitsune Zero does this
@eniko@peoplemaking.games added, and this is now the most recent game on the list. thank you for keeping this trope alive!
@retrohistories@digipres.club :D
Kinda sad we didn’t do it for Kitsune Tails
this could double as a list of games with easy TitleDrop% speed-runs
@retrohistories@digipres.club I really love the idea!
