I’ve been frequently having posts and replies that I’m trying to make just sit with a spinning wheel and never actually going through. I suspect this post may do the same but hopefully I’ll eventually get it posted. This happens when I’m posting to a local community or to a federated community and from both desktop and mobile (both web, there isn’t a client for my phone). Is this a known bug?

This post went right through. Perhaps it has something to do with when I add a URL?

Yea, this is when creating a new post… Typically when I post to a community I am including a link for the URL. Though thinking back I think I’ve seen the same issue without doing that but at this very moment it seems like that may be the difference.

I have not seen this behavior myself, but I have heard some people on other instances mention something similar.

    I have a few questions:

    1. Can you remember what time you had this happen? The more accurate the better - I will be able to see if anything pops out from the server logs from around that time.
    2. Have any of the posts gone through after you see the spinning wheel? When looking at your own profile, do you notice any posts which you thought didn’t go?

So I had been trying to create a post this morning from mobile that wasn’t working… I tried another post from mobile that didn’t work. I then tried it again from desktop and it sat spinning… that was right before I created this post but this post went directly through. I had checked the community and the post hadn’t shown up but after this one went through I created the post from scratch but this time it said it was a duplicate – at that point, sure enough, the post was in the community.

I’ll keep a note of times if it happens in the future but if you go back about 30mins to an hour ago that’s when I was having issues most recently (this post that eventually went through https://lemm.ee/post/48373?scrollToComments=true). It does seem like it goes in waves… like there’s a period where posting doesn’t work and then it starts working again.

So lemmy.world is exactly one of the instances where I have heard about this happening. They have a thread tracking this issue here: https://lemm.ee/post/29232

Update: Unfortunately I don’t see anything in the logs for the past 5 minutes, but I’m quite confident that the issue is not on our side. I would keep an eye on that lemmy.world post for updates.

Interesting. I have had it happen locally though as well (just not at this moment).

EDIT: I think it’s possible that when it’s happening locally it might be related to the server grabbing information from a URL. When creating the post that I referenced above that did eventually go through it never gave me the “suggested title” like it usually does. I can’t think of the other times that I’ve had it locally, however, so besides that one this morning I’ll have to just keep my eyes out for it happening in the future again.

If you can reproduce it locally then I would like to take a look at the logs again, possibly there will be more for me to see in that case

I will certainly pay attention in the future.

Related to the URL thing, is Lemmy supposed to pull a thumbnail from links and add that to the post? I linked an image directly on one of my posts and it shows up in the thread view but all of the other posts are just the grey box where I would think a thumbnail from the article would be (based on Reddit behavior, admittedly).

Yes, it’s supposed to pull a thumbnail, but it can be a bit rough around the edges. Working on improving this is one of my goals for lemm.ee right now!
