It’s because ByteDance is legally required to collect and hand over data to the Chinese government.

Have you heard of PRISM? Wait till you see all the US companies required to hand over data to the US government.

That doesn’t make it acceptable. I’m not on most mainstream social media. This is about the height of my social media participation. I find it sad that folks are trying to defend ByteDance and the Chinese government here. If I had to choose, I’d rather the US steal it than the Chinese government. The Chinese government are directly responsible for more extreme human rights violations related to the information collected on their own citizens than the US at the very least.

I never said it made it acceptable.

My point is that if you actually care about security, you’d hold the US government to this mystical standard that you also hold the Chinese government to.

Saying you’re cool with one government spying on you but not another is asinine, but I don’t expect rational takes from most people on US-China affairs.

I didn’t say I was cool with it. That’s what your argument was. US spied so it’s ok to use TikTok.

Edit: I said if I literally had to choose one or the other. One I don’t have a choice to avoid. The other I can. You’re arguing “why not both”
