Given how iHeartMedia, Spotify, and Apple are all more and more invested in the podcast ecosystem it seems they are purchasing content and putting it behind a paywall. I’d like to make sure the podcasts I care about are backed up.
I saw the internet archive had a podcasts section but there wasn’t a lot of the content I’d expect to see so also interested if anyone is building a public archive
You can grab Podcasts automaticly with Podgrab
Audiobookshelf selfhosted with docker is an excellent option I use.
I’ve also noticed the internet archive is doing some podcast stuff interesting the paywalled podcasts are there, but not accessible to the public.
Far enough, no point them painting a copyright target on their backs.
Would be interested to see torrents of podcasts get more love, when I last checked there really wasn’t much out there.
I started to archive podcasts like Small Town Murder and Crime in Sports, but also downloading stuff from the BBC, I really like their audio dramas. I’ll probably expand to other podcasts once I find more good ones.
Also a bit off topic, but I also like to record/archive sports radio broadcasts.
I use Podgrab to archive the podcasts I listen to, but these are all freely available podcasts.
If self hosting is your thing I use audiobookshelf to download the podcasts I subscribe too, has a nice interface to navigate them, and even mobile apps.
Not quite what you’re looking for (public archive) but a good starting point for a personal archive
That’s almost exactly what I’m looking for! Do you use their mobile apps to listen to podcasts? I didn’t see anywhere in their docs about exposing RSS feeds for podcasts to allow usage of existing podcasts apps.
Might just make my own to achieve that, I essentially just want a man in the middle archive of all the podcasts I am subscribed to so I can continue to use my existing podcast clients
I do use their app but I’m pretty sure you can have your own RSS for audiobooks, and I’m assuming for podcasts too. I really recommend you give it a go :) let me know if you need any help, or just at the selfhosted community. Happy to help
Edit: just checked, yes you can have your own RSS with audiobookshelf, so you can still serve to your favorite podcast app.
