I don’t mind games being in early access for a long time so much as I dislike that there’s no differentiation between games that are in early development and games that are mostly done. I’ve played early access games that are basically tech demos, and I’ve played early access games that might as well be full releases with some content updates pending. With thet much variability, the term ‘early access’ becomes near meaningless.

I do agree that having games sitting in early access for multiple years also contributes to the problem, especially when it seems like every developer of an early access game initially says that they expect to release a full version in 12-18 months.

yea thats my main problem with it. If the game isn’t ready after being sold for 8 years, then it actually is ready and the developer should shut the fuck up.

Yeah, or alternatively, if developers want to do open game development for an indefinite period of time, there should be a separate category for that. The early access tag should be for basically an open-beta ahead of a planned release, not a way to get people to pay you for a game that you’re never going to finish.

I played this game called Interstellar Marines that was in early access in 2015. Cool FPS, seemed like it had potential. Just checked, still in early access and never went anywhere.

On the flip side, I’ve been playing Cosmoteer thats in early access and that game is fucking amazing. Devs seem active enough and have a good road map.

I think it’s a case by case basis. If it’s like three Katz and an actual cat working on a big bad project after working their day jobs sure take your time I guess. but if you have a half a billion in funding like Star Citizen or that other elite dangerous no excuses

yea not all early access games are bad, but even if it’s good and came out 8 years ago, it’s not early access is people have been playing for almost a decade. Starfield is early access right now, and that’s actually early access.

I guess it depends on the game. Automation - The Car Company Tycoon game has been in EA forever. It is actively being worked on, but progress is consistently slow. Still, I dumped like 200 hours into it, so 🤷‍♂️ I really don’t mind that it’s still in EA because I guess it doesn’t really affect me.

it doesnt really affect anyone who already owns it, but it’s just stupid as fuck to see “early access” and see the game was released in 2015. That’s not early access anymore, it’s just a game they refuse to patch(which isnt illegal so the whole purpose of “early access” seems useless)
