Actually, I’m not too fond of raising stakes artificially. Stories don’t get more suspense if you put the whole galaxy at risk. In that case, we all know, that it’s going to end well, but if, say, the integrity of a beloved character may be compromised, everything’s possible. The makers of TNG and DS9 definitely knew how to tell compelling stories.
