I’m relatively new to this whole Newcastle metro business, and I have only ever used paper tickets and PAYG. I’ve been considering getting a season ticket (Pop card), and I wasn’t sure whether I should tap in and out with a season ticket, since there’s no balance to change. I looked it up on the Nexus website, and it looks like you should tap, however…

Thinking about the last 10 times I used the metro, out of the ~20 people who got off with me, only 3-5 other people tapped their card on the yellow reader. That made me think: there’s no way this many people had paper tickets. So you either don’t tap in/out with your season ticket (but then how do you check zones), or out of the 20 people, at least ~10 just tried to get away not buying a ticket.

What’s going on? Should I just ditch my PAYG Pop card and go thug life (since apparently, you can almost always get away like the other 10 people), or you just simply don’t have to tap your season ticket?

It reminds me of the whole “if you see someone shoplifting, no you didn’t” thing. I have also skipped out on a lot of Metro fares in my time, because I had zero income and needed to get around to interviews or, god forbid, actually visit a friend once in a while. Got caught once, but since I did this regularly for most of a year the fine was well worth it.

Nowadays I’m much better off (can even afford food! gosh!) so I’ll happily pay for such an important service.

All that said, it’s possible the people you saw just don’t know they’re supposed to tap out as well as in. Some of the buses near us have started doing the tap in and out thing instead of interacting with the driver, and I swear I’m the only person I’ve ever seen actually tap out as instructed. Whether the people who don’t tap out get charged more, or whether I’m doing it unnecessarily, is unclear. Maybe it’s something to do with the current £2 fare cap. No idea. But those were the instructions so I’ll keep doing it!

Stand down! Things haven’t got quite that bad yet. I just meant you don’t have to ask the driver for a ticket!
