Demand for thermal coal used by the power sector was supported by low rainfall in the south of China, which saw output from hydropower facilities in provinces such as Sichuan and Yunnan slide.

Coal use leads to droughts, which reduces Hydro performance, which leads to greater coal use…

Shouldn’t we have rules or sanctions on coal export to prevent the destruction of the only planet we have? Or are we ok with it as long as someone can make a profit selling it?

Coal is a very large export of Australia, as its very reliant on imports of a lot of goods to sustain itself. It’s a game of figuring out a way to get Austalia out of that hole if you want to stop coal from being mined.

recession beats pollution: if we all stopped consuming stuff, the world would be better off. lesser gdp is better gdp

Sanctions can only do so much. Coal can come from almost anywhere, including China itself.

Sure, but it least we would not contribute to what China is doing. And they don’t have enough, otherwise the wouldn’t import so much.

I also want to say that even though China is quite bad at that they’re by far not the only bad actor.

China produces the most carbon emissions of any other country and it’s due to their coal mining

Everything we do to curb global warming, China just negates all of that work

China has been getting away with more than Russia has, China should 100% be sanctioned at this point for numerous crimes least of which includes slavery in African countries

It’s a strategic boon that China can’t meet its own energy needs and has to import so much coal. We wouldn’t stop them from doing so. Bad for the planet, good for us geopolitically.

China needs power and they’re capped out on renewables manufacturing capacity.

The cleaner option is natural gas, but nobody seems willing to give China access to natural gas and oil reserves for some reason…
