This is a bit of a cultural thing. Grilling whole onions. It’s my favorite, I could eat 4 in one sitting.

Much as I love onions, I’ve never tried it. Don’t think it would be that good though. Like my onions crunchy and hard, not soft.
I’ll leave them peeled and throw them in the coals. Most of the times on top of my starter even. Just peel the black layers off and you are golden.
