On reddit, stopdrinking seems to be a support network for people who are in the process of quitting drinking, and for folks seeking and giving support for maintaining sobriety. Is that the same goal of this community here?

Something I never found on reddit was a sub for alcohol-free living that was not a support sub – a place for memes, jokes, mocktail recipes, more silly/casual gripes.

What do folks here think about a community like that on Lemmy? I wouldn’t want to overly fragment an alcohol-free community, but also wouldn’t want to use a support sub for that kind of content.

I definitely see some casual stuff on the subreddit. Maybe not memes, but certainly stuff about mocktails and a lot of humor.

Tbh, if this instance ends up becoming a replica of the sub, I’d be thrilled.

Huh, maybe I just missed those interactions. Or they were within threads that were more support-oriented. There were definitely days I skipped those posts because I wasn’t in a frame of mind for it.

You know, I think you’re right that they’re mostly tucked inside the typical sort of /r/stopdrinking thread and also the daily theme threads.

I could see them working here as their own threads! My gut says they didn’t often get their own threads on the subreddit because the user base was so big, often welcoming people in crisis. This is smaller, and it’s a chance to try things.

I totally get the frame of mind needing to be right for the heavy threads.

For me, the absolute best part about the subreddit is the community’s disposition. It’s just a genuinely nice and supportive corner of the internet. The lack of hostility and judgment is so important.

If we can do that here, that’s a huge win. And I have a lot of faith, especially because that’s kind of how Lemmy seems to roll in general.

Truly, yes. For a community that is so often judged by the rest of society, it’s a blessing to be accepted in all one’s flawed glory.

I thought it was a Reddit migration myself. But I’ve seen people post mocktail recipes and I’ve ranted lots on there. Especially on Friday’s Vent-o-matic.

None of the mods here were mods on Reddit. I’d let them take this over if they came here.

I think it’s also worth noting that /r/stopdrinking has stayed open throughout the entire blackout period – which makes complete sense, as a support sub that is a lifeline, perhaps the sole lifeline, for many.

So mods not having to manage two communities, while also giving community to those who want or need it outside of a reddit if it’s no longer a place they want to support, is great. Thanks for making this!

Good point about living. I quit alcohol 5 years ago, and used SD every day to get me through it. Now I’m just interested to chat with other people who live alcohol free. Think it would be good to separate the two.

Yeah, I definitely feel the same way. Like, I don’t know if this makes sense, but the joy of living alcohol free without it being in the context of providing support to people who are struggling? Sometimes I’m in the space to visit the difficulties of not drinking, but sometimes I’m just not. The separation for me feels kinda like, “stopdrinking,” and “notdrinking.” Does that make sense?

It seems like our opinion is the minority so I’ll probably wait a bit and see what happens :)

        Totally agreed! Makes sense.

It’s all still pretty small here, let’s first see how it goes.

I think I’m just glad it’s here. And in a way, sharing jokes and recipes is a valid method of support too! I guess we see how much traction we get here and whether people have stronger feelings than me :)

I’m here for the community and to encourage others to stop drinking. If others want to post non-support things, I just won’t be engaging with them.
