Out of curiosity, in your experience was it mostly government ads (or propaganda depending on the content ig) or corporate advertising like we get so much of in the world now?

It was commercial ads during NEP times, then mostly propaganda, plus occasional commercial ads targeted at foreigners which somehow ended up broadcast to the Soviet public as well. Sometimes it was also commercial ads whose purpose was to shift demand from one factory product to another factory alternative due to shortages or whatever.

But all in all ads as in Western point of view were rare. What was common - that’s product placement in Soviet movies. Ads didn’t have a long lasting effect, product placement in a popular movie could last for decades.
