Canada's largest union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), is calling on the Trudeau government to stand strong in the face of bullying by tech giants Meta and Google, who do not want to pay their fair share to support local journalism in Canada.
I also dislike how much of our local media is owned by foreign elements. But a big cause of that is the transfer of wealth and ownership to the US that’s taken place since NAFTA. If we can find ways to keep more of the value created by news within Canada we can hopefully create an environment where local news orgs can form and keep their share of it. Certainly allowing all that value to be transferred south won’t help.
Maybe if local journalism was owned by Canadians I’d care about this more.
