The latest on a government shutdown: Today is the last day for Congress to fund the government. A shutdown will begin at 12:01 a.m. if they do not act. House Republicans failed to pass their short-term spending bill on Thursday in an embarrassing defeat that makes a shutdown more likely. The Senate is still working on a bipartisan bill to keep the government open through Nov. 17. That is expected to pass overwhelmingly, but some Republican opposition means it is unlikely to pass until after the deadline. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., suggested Friday night that he might be open to the Senate’s bill, but only if they strip out funding for Ukraine. The Senate returns at noon today. No votes are scheduled in the House, but members have been advised to be on Capitol Hill.

Just so everyone is aware, we have already budgeted the Ukrainian money for this year, and the military will not be shutting down with the rest of our government. This shutdown will not interfere with Ukrainian aide in any large way (it might in small, hard to predict ways) unless it drags on for a very long time.

Plus, Biden could just divert any of the military funds he wants towards Ukraine.

Trump did it for his wall when the 4 government shutdowns under his watch didn’t work in getting the money. Just vaughly say it’s for national security and go golfing.

I do not think he is a pro-Russian voice, but merely shares news that he thinks is relevant. He has been critical of Russia in the past.

I just wanted to drop my clarification to make sure this article didn’t worry anyone who has been out of the loop for a bit.

So it’s normal for an individual to be able to post about 1,500 links in less than 24hrs? I’m not saying this is a pro-russian voice - the opinion is hardly the problem. That’s their game - create such noise so as to make the truth inaccessible. I’m saying this is a troll, and not an authentic member of the community trying to discuss anything.

God, people will not stop harassing you for posting a few links. I can see you’ve made 58 threads at the time of writing this comment, which I think is very reasonable.

Please keep posting. We need people like you.

I’m not making these comments directed at you, but so the community can drill down and draw their own conclusions. 38 posts in this community, but 1,428 in general in less than 24hrs of “being new”. Healthy skepticism is important, same as coming to fact-based conclusions.

I’m here to contribute to the discussion, not farm karma using American politics stories. If this post is a call to action of any Americans here that have not done so, yet - I understand. Otherwise, it still comes off, to me, as a sensationalization/clickbait of something very few American voter have practical control over.

I can see why a person might think that due to the high level of activity, but I am just not so sure. Personally I am willing to continue to just observe until it is easier to tell.

    https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/government-shutdown-deadline-09-30-23/index.html

The Senate is using a procedural tactic called a “live quorum call,” which requires all of the senators to physically go to the floor, to delay their procedural vote on their own version of a stopgap spending bill.

Remember: The Senate has put together its own bipartisan proposal to avert a shutdown — but House Republicans have thrown cold water on that plan, leaving the two chambers at an impasse and the attention on the House GOP.

Key senator comments on House bill: Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has vowed all week to slow the voting process beyond the midnight shutdown deadline if a stopgap bill includes funding for the war in Ukraine.

He told CNN on Saturday that he will not slow down the Senate’s consideration of the House GOP’s 45-day spending bill — which, crucially, does not include Ukraine funding — if it passes the House and the Senate takes it up.

This gives lawmakers a path to consider the spending bill very quickly in the Senate, possibly avoiding a shutdown (or at least shortening it), as long as the bill passes the House and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer brings it to the Senate floor.

Man, back in the day I remember thinking Rand Paul was a kooky motherfucker who never really contributed anything useful; but at the same time, never seemed malevolent.

He’s really shown his true colors as an evil sack of shit.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Republican Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., told lawmakers this morning there are not enough GOP votes to pass any Republican-drafted CR, or continuing resolution, to temporarily fund the government, according to a source in the private meeting.

Areas where restrictions are difficult, such as the National Mall or some trailheads, would remain open to the public, but trash collection, emergency response and other services wouldn’t be guaranteed.

This comes after the House failed to pass a GOP stop-gap measure with border security provisions attached yesterday, with 21 hardline conservatives issuing a political blow to Speaker McCarthy and making the prospects of a government shutdown tonight all but certain.

With a deadline hours away, congressional leaders on Saturday are scrambling to secure a last-minute funding deal to prevent a government shutdown that would inflict economic pain on millions of American families.

Members of Congress are required by law to continue getting paid during a government shutdown, even as their staff and millions of federal employees would go without pay if the funding deadline lapses.

Since that can have political implications, some House lawmakers have submitted letters to the chamber’s Chief Administrative Officer to request that their pay be withheld if the shutdown takes place as expected.

The original article contains 918 words, the summary contains 202 words. Saved 78%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

“Don’t worry! If the GOP takes control of the House, Ukraine aid won’t be in danger! Saying anything otherwise is Russian misinformation that is meant to divide us! This is fine!”
