I was in a school production of “The Hobbit” back in 2003, based on the Tolkien-authorized stage adaptation from 1968. Let’s just say that pretty much everyone lives in that version (I don’t think there’s any battle at all). I had read The Hobbit book a year or two earlier, and played the 2003-ish video game, but it was the school play version that stuck in my mind. I was very surprised going into the third Hobbit film that some fairly significant characters do not make it.
