What was the reason he failed, lack of skill or is he a total buttwrench that is uncoachable?

KOTOR kinda, level your character up as a scout, soldier, or scoundrel, and then around level 6-8 you become a Jedi. Not awful, but limited how much you could take advantage of either skill tree. I did a lot of runs in the game where I didn’t use any level ups until I made Jedi
