  • I live in Taiwan as well, and have the same issue. Basically, in my opinion, if this starts, it will be very fast, unexpected, and there will be full blockade, nothing gets out. But assuming you’ll be able to get out… My primary backup options now are Turkey and Thailand. For Thailand, you can get Thai Elite for 5-10 years, although it is pricey now. Turkey, residence / citizenship through investment / real estate. I also consider Portugal (digital nomad visa) and Malaysia (also digital nomad). But, I guess for me it’s more options because I don’t have kids / wife.

  • My bet, if the guy lived in Taiwan, it will be difficult to him to live in Argentina in many aspects. I considered that option myself, spent 3 months in Argentina, got robbed twice, tired of crazy inflation, protests under my windows every week, doing cambio and exchanging dollar cash on a black market, overall being paranoid about my things stolen - and ended up in Taiwan, which is probably, geopolitics aside, is the safest place I’ve ever lived. Plus, new president…Let’s just say, things look unpredictable now in Argentina.

  • I spent 20 years building a portfolio of design related skills that eventually converted into a well paid job, and status in a company that allows me to work on my terms, which currently includes working from a country of my choice. At some points of this long journey I only ate instant noodles and had no social life. I don’t recommend doing that, but in my case, there were sacrifices. Just take time and effort to build remote skills and portfolio of impressive work, that will enable the cash flow and location independence that comes with that. Then you should ask yourself if you really want to be a digital nomad. There’s plenty of pros and cons. Be careful what you wish for.

  • I tried digital nomad thing for a year. 7 countries. Most adequate, safe places, 1,5-2K just doesn’t cut it. My expenses on average were 3K. Luckily I make substantially more than that. Sure, nothing wrong with living in a bunaglo and eating street food only somewhere in Southeast Asia, or South America, but if you want safety, good infrastructure, modern urban environment, this comes with a price - still cheaper than in US / Canada, but generally not really cheap. And yes, this is only sustainable if you spend in a country long time, bothered to learn the language, pay taxes there, make local friends and not just expat friends, and generally, working towards something like PR / second passport. Which in turn, for me, crosses out a lot of countries from list, such as Thailand, for example, where you can live for decades, and still be a tourist without any rights.
