  • Finishing up Blowback S5 I’m really struck by how borderline criminally bad the common education is on what the Khmer Rouge ideology was actually based in and how the motives for the genocide was a sort of ethnic renaissance combining clearing foreign influence from the Khmer people with revolutionary ideals grabbed from various places, with the latter part being vague due to not progressing out of the “clearing” stage, so to speak.

    Also how underexplained the simmering nationalist resentments between Cambodia and Vietnam are, as well as the dynamic between the communist movements of each fueling the conflict. And I don’t mean criminal just because the popularly propagated view is anticommunist, but obscuring how historical events and tendencies developed towards genocide should be criminal within any publicly admissible worldview.

    But it is of course most convenient to frame it all as leftist infighting and natural d*generation of revolutions.
