  • I certainly don’t see it as a production game, and the designer himself didn’t pitch it that way. Then again, this show isn’t a straight documentary, containing plenty of scripted material, so who knows?

And note-- I’m a bit of a MAME fan, and have never run in to this one under the name “Herpes,” nor seen it on any list.

Also, speaking as someone well-familiar with C64 and Apple ][ graphics from this era, I’d lean towards the graphics looking like an 8-bit Atari’s, as you say. Based on the sophistication of the gameplay, I’d guess he wrote this in AtariBasic, then built a little cabinet around the game unit. I suppose me & my high school buddies could have done the same for some of our old 1983 games, given sufficient motivation.

In any case, discounting this is all scripted, I really do get the sense this is just a little social experiment, maybe partly for his own amusement, maybe partly to talk about for the show. The gameplay and concept certainly don’t scream to me that he intended to make it big with this game, and his demeanor and way of talking about it don’t seem to suggest that, either.

I’ve looked at the credits for this ep at various places (including the IMDB), and the actors’ list seems to cut off after the Ray Davies - Mari Wilson segment, before this guy’s starts. Guess you’ll have to dig further to figure that out. The total lack of context for his segment certainly doesn’t help, but I guess that was the style of the show at that point.

  • Oic! As a long-time Redditor (hopefully not for much longer), with new Lemmy & Kbin accts, I get it.

Btw, the Peertube version of YT seems like a tall task on the face of it. Not just because of the ginormous amount of content hosted on YT, but also because Google has worked out licensing & revenue agreements with countless entities, including big-time players who allow their stuff to be uploaded there. I.e., Peertube trying to go down a similar path would pretty-easily be cast as piracy, and I’d hate to see the instance-runners have federal agencies descending on them, potentially ruining their lives.

  • Nice to see you on the Reddit side of the Fediverse.

Hmm, that’s the first time across r/Lemmy, Kbin.Social or Lemm.ee I’ve heard that there’s a ‘Reddit-side’ to the FV. Do you mean Kbin as a whole, or this instance specifically?

Btw, my college basically forced us to buy one of those things (no regrets here), but if one of us dorm rats had upgraded the case like that, we’re probably talking about a stolen Mac sooner or later. :S

  • The admin is extremely high-functioning IME.

He updates users frequently, and is very good at explaining what’s going on without getting lost in tech-speak. He’s personally attended to one of my issues (avatar upload problem) with a quickness, even doing so via email. He also took the time to help Lemmy.World with their recent attack. Lastly, altho FV instances evidently can cost as little as US$10-20/m, he runs a beefy setup with a lot of security and high-end stability, spending US$200/m to do so.

Sunaurus is a friggn’ boss IMO.
