Hey man. Can you add some links to this? Direct links instead of hashtags? It would help people to validate the info.
The biggest issue with hockey in North America is the the officiating is so discretionary. Icing is actually a very simple rule, but it’s not always called by the book and that makes hockey rules difficult to understand. I can imagine this is frustrating to a new fan.
I’m fortunate that I’m able to take my kids to a few hockey games a year. I find it helps to sit higher up so that they can see the whole game and that helps them see how plays develop and how positioning works better than sitting at ice level. Even they can see that rules are basically ignored at times and arbitrary calls are made to even out the game. When I look at how the rules in rugby are handled it’s just better in my opinion. I’m ok with refs missing calls sometimes, cause the game is fast and that’s going to happen, but the game management and trying to balance penalties and keep the game close kind of makes me lose interest cause the game ends up depending on luck a lot of the time. That’s my rant for the night. I’m going to bed.
I agree that PLD for Laine was a reasonable trade and made sense at the time. I know that you aren’t going to replace Buff. My opinion is totally hindsight, but I think if you went back and traded Laine for a strong #1 D the Jets would be in a different place right now.
And totally agree that it’s surprising how long of a leash Chevy had. I feel like most teams would rather keep the devil they know vs making a large change. Having someone under you who isn’t performing keeps the spotlight on them, but replacing that person puts the spotlight on you if they can’t perform any better.
I don’t know exactly how Tkachuk got hurt, but according to Maurice, there’s a long list of serious injuries. This is pretty standard for teams that make deep playoff runs. I personally wish that the playoffs were called more in line with the rulebook for a bunch of reasons, but minimizing injury is one of those reasons. I don’t see the upside of having a bunch of the best players play hurt through the finals, not being able to play at their potential, and not being able to start next season or shortening their careers. I don’t see how it improves the game to not call slashing and crosschecking penalties. I’m also skeptical on how many players hit their head and can’t stand up after, but are able to pass concussion protocol and return to the game. This shit will come back to haunt the NHL in the future.
Basically, the Leafs haven’t been much different the last 4 years. We haven’t accomplished any more than the Jets, but we keep trying the same thing. We keep adding talent and getting nowhere.
I don’t follow the Jets as close as the Leafs, but I don’t think you guys were the same team after Buff left. I think trading Laine for PLD was a mistake - should have been for someone to replace Buff on the backend. That being said, nobody is paying me millions to GM a team, so that opinion could be completely wrong.
I think there’s a lot of room for enhancing the user experience, but it’s definitely not bad. This will come in time.
I feel like the content and discussion is a bit more mature than reddit. This is the main reason I will stay here.
It has to be better than Melnyk though right? Right?
I think the jets are about to enter a rebuild. You guys might want to hire Gallant and prepare the tank o7 o7 o7
Hopefully the new ownership will be a positive change.
It was 2 - 0 then I had to take a phone call. Came back to 6 - 1. Ouch.
The real Stanley Cup is the friends we make along the way.
Thanks for posting the gdt!
I was just listening to day by day this morning. Definitely gets in your head.
Sorry. With the goalies you probably know just as much as I do. I might do mock drafts for the next year and see how much worse I am than nhl teams.
That’s fair. It definitely wasn’t his best 3 years, but I think it’s also partly because of where the caps are - just like the penguins they are on a downturn. I think he’ll do better in New York. At the very least a step up from gallant.
Really? Why is that? Guy has had a ton of success. The rangers have a ton of talent and underperformed last year. This should help.
I might as well start the controversial opinions. I was hoping the leafs would get him and replace keefe. I can’t watch another year of us doing the exact same thing.
Fair enough. I think it would make you a mod by default. Not that there’s too much to do when the community is small, but if you are busy I get not wanting to add commitments.
Yeah we posted the last game day thread manually. It would be nice to work out some fancier formatting for next year but we have all summer and hopefully there will be some improvements to lemmy by then too so we will see what can be done.
I love watching rugby but I still don’t quite understand all the rules and I know dick all about any of the players. If you want I can try to add your community in our sidebar. Hopefully I can add some text there that says friends of c/hockey. I’m still learning here.
I’ll play devil’s advocate. You job is to hire the best coach you can. There’s a coach with Hall of fame credentials available that has shown some problematic issues in the past. When you talk to him he’s able to address how he intends to change those previous behaviours and that he’s learned the errors of his ways. That’s pretty tempting if you are a GM especially if other options are someone unproven or proven to be incapable of winning.
Not saying that I’d hire Babs if it was my job, but I can see how it happened.
