She allegedly made her first billion in 2005. It literally couldn’t have been from book sales.
Why not? The first Harry Potter novel was released in 1997. By 2005, 8 years later, she has release 6 of the 7 Harry Potter books.

Thousands of underpaid workers in publishing offices, marketers, delivery drivers, and bookstore workers.
Really? By that standard, everyone is unethical. I’m quite sure if I dig deep enough I can find something in your job’s supply chain that’s can be considered “unethical” and using your guilt by association logic, you are an unethical person too.
You can’t make a billion dollars honestly
Again, you have no justification for this assertion.
is there literally no way to make a billion dollars honestly? I don’t know that you can make that kind of hard statement
Thank you. Exactly my point. Best not to make such statements that you can’t back up and are of questionable soundness.
I LOVE Lemmy because it has the oldschool Reddit vibe where people will disagree and neither person is downvoting the other. They just have civil discussion. Much better!!
Enjoy while it lasts. It won’t be long before this place becomes exactly like Reddit. It’s already beginning to happen - especially when you talk about politics or politics-related stuff.
Downvotes should be for off topic posts/comments or spam.
Disagreement is best communicated by replying saying you disagree and why. It’s a discussion forum. Talk.
quality of answers only drops off when prompts are poorly crafted
And people think GPT4 is approaching AGI …
Not to mention the vulnerability to “poisoning” if trained on the very output it creates.
Fair enough. What about J K Rowling? (Her politics notwithstanding as it has nothing to do with how she made her fortune.)
You think they worked an order of magnitude more?
Income has never correlated with effort. People are paid based on supply and demand.
Also not to defend the scumbag that is Musk but like many billionaires, a lot of his wealth is based on “what people think” - specifically, what people think of his companies and how much they are willing to part with for its shares.
It just says one amount you can make honestly and one amount you can’t. The implication is that the outer limit of what you can make honestly is somewhere in between.
So what is the amount. How do you justify it - other than “because I said so”?
I really want to hear how people justify why they think Michael Jordan has made his billions unethically.
There’s an old saying, you can become a millionaire through honesty, integrity, and hard work, but you can’t become a billionaire.
IMHO the saying is nonsense. Why do we draw the magic line at $999,999,999.99 USD? This there something special about that number with regards to the USD?
Edit: Guess the redditors are here. More interested in ideology than discussion. All I did was ask for the justification behind the idea that you can’t become a billionaire “through honesty, integrity, and hard work”.
It’s ridiculous someone can assert such a claim with zero justification and if you dare question it, you get downvoted.
It’s only a matter of time I guess that this place becomes the new Reddit. September came quick.
This needs to happen to Monster Energy drink (who is suing everyone who uses the term “monster”) and Bethesda (who got lawsuit shot with the term “scroll”).
Not really. I think I visited twice this month - pop in to see someone’s comments page and some small sub. Nowadays if google sends me to Reddit, I just view the cached version.
You can also use the cached version by clicking on the 3 vertical dots next to a search result. Don’t think it gives Reddit any hits.
Seem pretty easy to work around, just call it extension of the earlier service. You just added a new feature.
Read it as “Does Star Wars still retain any value?” which is just as valid a question for many.
I didn’t even know I can Ctrl + arrow keys
to move from word to word and I have been using computers for over 20 years …
It’s carrier based
Does this happen to iPhones?
I don’t live in the US so I don’t know. Phones in my country can’t be carrier locked anyway due to laws. But they can preinstall crap if you buy one from them - except for the iPhone; those always come in factory condition.
I feel people like Musk and Trump are more dangerous in general.
Zuckerberg, Bezos, Gates … etc. are the “traditional” billionaires. They are greedy but most of the time rational thus fairly predictable - you don’t expect them to do anything crazy.
Musk and Trump on the other hand are narcissists. They petty, vindictive, insecure, and have fragile egos. There is no telling what would set them off and how far they will go to get even over a perceived slight.
government spending is a potential work around for this limitation
Not a finance guru but I believe there are also “market operations” where the central bank prints money to buy up assets thereby injecting money into the economy - and I guess when they want to shrink the money supply they just sell off those assets.
Doesn’t matter what you are paid. You can be making a billions or $12/hr, you are still profiting off unethical behavior of others.
