Im sure that also has something to do with Bashir becoming a war vet himself. The man saw some shit.

Bashir was a character who had a tremendous amount of growth over the series. Garak, in fact, remarked about it in DS9 S06E01 - ”A Time to Stand”:

GARAK: Well look at you. You act as if you haven’t a care in the world. It’s exactly that kind of smug, superior attitude that makes people like you so unpopular.
BASHIR: Are you trying to insulting me?
GARAK: A thirty two point seven percent chance of survival. I call that insulting.
BASHIR: Don’t take it so personally, Garak. It’s strictly a matter of mathematics.
GARAK: No, it’s strictly a matter of our lives. You’re not genetically engineered. You’re a Vulcan.
BASHIR: If I’m a Vulcan, then how do you explain my boyish smile?
GARAK: Not so boyish anymore, Doctor.

Ah, yes. That’s the beginning of season 6, with the 6 episode sequence to retake the station from the Dominion. Great stuff.

Yeah, it was in the middle of that whole period when we had those gigantic Dominion War story arcs. That was definitely the best of DS9.

        Great stuff.
