China’s trash era for sure. Sucks that they were right about upholding their founders’ achievements despite their mistakes and wrong about literally everything else. Even if we assume the USSR’s collapse was inevitable, splitting the Socialist world into two blocks - one propped up by the USSR and the other being China and sometimes the DPRK - did irreparable damage to a dozen other paths of socialist development.

What if, when the former USSR stopped exporting food to Cuba, North Korea and Vietnam, China had been positioned to fill in the gaps? Famines could have been averted, waves of migration to the capitalist world would never have happened, and so on. Imagine China backing Yugoslavia from the UN security council, or East Germany, or any one of a dozen others.

Even now, China’s foreign policy is better, but it can hardly be called “good.” I often think that they’re so interested in playing the long game that they’ve forgotten that the short game even exists. BRICS is exciting, the BRI is exciting, but I just can’t help but feel that the demand for revolution is totally unfulfilled by Chinese exporters.
