I read it as a kid and at that time I read everything in German.
Did you try re-watching your favorite TV shows in french, with french subtitles on? That way you have the advantage of already knowing the plot and dialogues in englisch and you can pause and google whenever a word that you don´t know comes up. It’s how I got good at English while watching The Simpsons, maybe it works for you too.
This is great advice, and I don’t do it as often as I should. It really is amazing how well that can work…
