This is a tool for the bourgeoisie to minimise the contributions of human workers so that their political power, which draws on public perceptions, is reduced. If everyone thinks it’s all run by AI, they’re going to be confused by the idea of giving more pay to the workers. What workers? This makes it harder for workers to advocate for themselves and make demands.
I agree, but what that means is that this marketing of the drive thru as “AI-run” is an escalation of hostilities. The workers just lost all of their less disruptive options for seeking better conditions, and now it’s only going to get better if they choose the nuclear option.
It’s like back in school when a bully would just repeatedly poke you all day, and the only way to get him to stop was to punch him, escalating hostilities. Did he deserve to be punched? Absolutely. But did you deserve a peaceful way of solving your problems? Yes you did. And is he going to try to use your violence to incriminate you so the teacher punishes you? He sure is.
The question here is what working conditions are bad, but not so bad the workers will take action? How hot can the pot get before the frog jumps out? The company is hoping that this will be bad, but not so bad that the workers feel the need to strike. They want to slowly creep away at the rights of the workers.
It may be that, but a lot of people seem to be interpreting it as “oh look AI is shit, it’ll never replace humans” when in actual fact its a headline that’s saying “30% of the human workers have been replaced by AI for this use case”

That’s why you strike.
