They could simply start airlifting all the settlers back to where they came from then abolish themselves.

It’s a World War. Just like we got laughed at for saying in 2020.
We’ll see if it boils over to that point. However there’s every sign that the war industry has learned to keep conflict restrained - they want to maximise profits, and a world war clauses issues that impact profits.
Lots of people want to keep war restrained, but that doesn’t mean they succeed at it. Every war that has broken out has been a conflict someone wanted desperately to contain. War is a monster that afflicts us, not a servant we use as we will for our own profit.
I’m sure some people think they can do that. I’m sure they’ve had little bits of success here and there too. But it’s really just summoning a demon to do your bidding. The demon’s not as well understood and controllable as those who summon it want to think.
