Honest question. Don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware how unlikable Meta is and there are plenty of valid criticisms.
But it feels like everything Quest related gets downvoted even in here and this is the Quest community. It’s certainly not big enough to show up on the hot page.
I’d love to have a proper Quest alternative, but at least on standalone it’s currently the best (if not only valid) option. I know, Pico, but I don’t think Bytedance is the savior here.

Bought the Quest 2 when it was in sale for cheap in 2020 plus the pro headband with added battery life.
Never had an issue with it so far. It’s comfortable, it’s surprisingly performant. I didn’t feel like it was too expensive. I can use it for multiple hours straight.
I mostly used it for a while for VR Chat with Steam. You quickly noticed the vast majority of folks on VR chat also are all using Quests, and it’s for a good reason.
It’s a solid entry level piece of hardware and for awhile was extremely affordable. I never experienced any Facebook related issues. I made an account specifically for the quest, and it’s never come up as any kind of problem. Never had to contact customer support for anything.
It “just works” and that’s enough to classify as worth the money.

The issue is you admit the company behind the product is bad, but you still have interest in the product.
Not ideal, I know. But both of these things can be true at the same time. There are plenty of reasons to dislike Meta, I have many myself. But I also like VR and at least currently as I see it, Quest is basically the only option.
The question I’m having is why people who dislike both Meta and Quest are following c/metaquest, just to downvote everything and leave snarky comments. How is that helping anything? All that does is repel people that don’t really care about what Meta does or has done. And let’s be honest, 90% probably don’t even know that Meta == Facebook, let alone care about it. It’s pretty much beating this community to death and it already only has a handful of people that are actually active.
For people building their own open source headsets that would rather loose both legs than use a product by Meta, this community is probably not for them, no offense.
If you have a different point of view on something, I’m happy to talk about it. But these comments are often not even related to the post, just a creative way of bashing Meta that adds absolutely nothing to the discussion.

Here’s maybe a friendly question…Can you jailbreak (i.e. use Quest hardware without relying on Meta/FB software) the Quests relatively easily? Imo albeit a little…Weird, to get a used headset, getting a Quest used & jailbreaking it (if possible) seem like the next best way to get & use the hardware without directly paying Meta.
Are you sure it wasn’t “New Posts”? I don’t see how a post with 0 upvotes qualifies as hot, unless it’s literally the only post there is.
I came here from hot as well. Lemmy gives priority to posts from small communities to try to help them grow, or at least I’ve read comments claiming such.
A problem with this is narrow-minded users who downvote posts from small communities “because I don’t like it/want to see this content.” But that is a narrow-minded, infantile approach which just screws up the functioning and growth of communities.
I hate seeing all the lame ass memes and cringeworthy anime thirst posts, but I block the communities rather than downvote the posts.
Just because I am not interested in a community, it doesn’t mean that I should fuck up the functionality of appropriate/relevant content for the given community by downvoting.
I’ve had this happen with my posts in !vans@lemmy.world, where I can tell that the people downvoting some posts were from outside the community.
It’s a widespread problem that is the direct result of unhealthy users who don’t understand the function of downvotes, and think it’s a disagreement/dislike button, when it’s actually meant for hate, trolls, irrelevant content, and misinformation.
The same morons who downvote appropriate community posts for communities they don’t like upvote irrelevant content for communities they do like. They’re the users that helped contribute to so many reddit communities becoming homogeneous meme/circle-jerking subs.
People like to think that all the toxic/unhealthy users stayed on reddit, but enough of the least common denominator came over to continue misusing down/upvotes and screwing up the functionality of this site and hinder the growth of communities.

Weirdly enough, it was for sure hot, albeit a few pages in (not sure how many). Lemmy’s sorting is weird.
The standalone mode was really awesome because you could just play without having to debug your VR setup first. Now, with Quest Air Link, it works reasonably well to play PC VR games without being tied to a cable (but it’s just as annoying as other VR setups I’ve used in terms of glitches and having to debug it). Just being able to bring the headset to friends or a huge empty garage and play there is awesome.
I also wish there was an alternative. I have no intention of giving Meta more money and locking myself in further by buying the overpriced games on the Oculus store (and thanks to Air Link, I don’t have to). But I’m not planning on buying a headset that doesn’t have a standalone mode, and replacing Facebook with Chinese Facebook isn’t going to make anything better.
To be completely honest, Meta treated privacy-aware users on Quest a lot more respectfully than I expected.
I’m hoping Vavle comes in with a more affordable headset soon
I own a Quest Pro and love it. It wipes the floor with every other headset I have owned.
