People constantly gatekeep metal music and it has become the norm for when I talk about metal with a stranger.

That’s why I want to know what the weirdest thing people gatekeep?

Does anyone else feel like they used to have the perspective that others were gate keeping them when they were much younger?

I feel like I used to think like this, but I had the realization that I just wasn’t asking the right questions or around the right influences/environment. Like with music, I’m a metal head, but it isn’t a definitive part of me like it was when I was younger. I’m unlikely to engage with anyone on the topic and would likely have trouble remembering a bunch of info if I was put on the spot.

Through years of being an internet-dweller, I’ve found people can gatekeep nearly anything. Depression and anxiety are some notable odd ones.

    Cricket

I’m German, my aunt is French and she married a Brit. Nice gentleman, we always joke about that he’s a retired secret agent. Anyways, while we were visiting them he was watching a cricket match on TV. And he actually really seemed to love the game. And if I recall correctly that was a relatively important match.

But he seemed to be embarrassed about it and turned it off. But my wife and I were actually really interested in getting to know the game because we had no idea about the rules. We just knew stuff like that a game could go on for days and such. But he thought we were joking and left the TV off and we never learned what that game is about.

Cricket is great and it takes a lot of time to get under the skin of the sport and understand the intricacies. It’s also easy to take the piss out of because of the slow paced nature of 5 day test matches and the funny jargon.

Sounds like he was either being a little bit gatekeepy because he couldn’t be bothered to explain the rules or he was a bit sensitive to having his sport ridiculed… or maybe he was just being polite and turned it off to socialise

Honestly, this was already happening in my local music scene over a decade ago.

It’s a large part of why I got out of the physical metal spaces…

I don’t care if it’s swedish melodic gloom thrash death metal or whatever, I just wanted to mosh and have a good time.

I can talk about music theory, and technical masterpieces, and all that. Something can be technically impressive and still sound like crap. People don’t seem to separate the skill involved from the actual music put out.

That being said, I’m tool old to hop in the pit these days. Even if I didn’t get “hurt” I’d still be sore all over for a week lol.
