I think you are confusing Chinese nationalism with Han chauvinism, both of which are recognized and defined by the CCP. While Han Chauvinism has been around since the Han Dynasty, Chinese nationalism is a comparatively new way to combat it.

Chinese communist leaders have been recognizing Han chauvinism as a problem since Mao. So much to the point where they created the idea of Zhonghua minzu, or an idea of China being a multi ethnic nation state.

The CCP initially rejected this idea, but resurrected it after Maos death due to increasing clashes with their ethnic territories. It’s still a recognized issue today, one of which they claim to be making progress on at least in policy, but in reality han Chauvinism is still very prevalent in Chinese society.

Karl Marx being Chinese does not clash with their internal idea of a nationality, but their idea of nationality isn’t very attached to their particular sect of Chauvinism.
