Edit: Rule has been replaced.

Old title was “An addendum to the rules. No more using the words “Nazi” or “Fascist”.”

The words Nazi and Fascist have no meaning. No one is referring to 1940s Germany or 1930s Italy. It’s just name-calling at this point. You can see this all over this sub.

So the banned words has been extended from just stuff like racial slurs to include Nazi and Fascist.

Yes, I do realize this is a slippery slope, but hopefully any meaning you wanted to impart can still be done without the kindergarten-level name-calling.

Credit to https://lemm.ee/u/dukethorion@lemmy.world for the idea.

Hell of a lot better than my “Conservatives Only” tag idea or banning bad faith arguments. It’s a clear cut rule that should help with a problem without cutting down on actual discussions.

If you have any feedback/complaints/raging against the machine/questions, feel free to leave them here.

On a real note, instead of seeing it as “name calling” maybe now is the opportunity to ask yourself instead, “why am I being called a nazi and a fascist?”

Because the majority of people on this platform are of one mind, whether it’s admitted or not, and they feel like their cause is the only one, and anyone who disagrees with them is automatically a fascist, Nazi, or some other extremist.

Lately, (last few years) civil discourse has gone away, and we’re left with screaming and shouting, tantrums, and bullying.

We literally cannot discuss issues without being called bigots, racists, Nazis, homophobes, etc. Even if you feel like the other person is IN FACT one of those things, maybe you could show them your side and see if they can understand it from your point of view. I’ve changed my mind on things before when presented with more information, and I’d be willing to bet that most normal conservative people are the same way. The problem is when you loop us all into the same boat, you don’t give that person a chance, because you are clearly the only one that is right.

Because people don’t have an actual argument and just want to brand political opposition as evil that can be dismissed out of hand.

Because its an easy name to come up with, and most of lemmy is left wing. They get upset with someone, and Nazi is the first thing to come to mind. Doesn’t matter if the leftist is the one calling for the genocide of 7 million jews, the leftist doesn’t care.

Its similar to calling someone a bastard, you don’t actually care if they were born out of wedlock, you’re just want to call them names.

The way I see it is probably not the way you see it. However, when it comes to words like “bastard” can we agree that certain words (especially “swear” words or those with disparaging or negative meanings) are reused with various meanings based on the context?

“Bastard” is almost universally no longer used to describe a child born out of wedlock, and is instead used as a pejorative term.

The same is being done with “nazi” and “fascist”. They are being used as pejorative terms towards people who the users of the words feel are acting similarly to nazis or fascists. There may be some who literally mean “the holocaust”, but broadly, it’s referring to the actions and policies taken by the nazi party during that time. Likewise “fascist” is describing fascist-esque action and policy. Like Margot Robbie I’m sure you don’t control the railways or the flow of commerce. But if one espouses fascist ideology, I think the label is somewhat warranted.

Yeah, that would be a difference of opinion. The way I usually see them used is simply as a insult. There’s actual people who want to commit another holocaust, but the word Nazi is almost never used to describe them. Hamas is a perfect example, topical even. But no one is calling them Nazis for reasons beyond me. Fascism is even more watered down.

The words Nazi and Fascist have no meaning. No one is referring to 1940s Germany or 1930s Italy.

You’re aware that fascism is a political ideology that has, unfortunately, survived beyond those time periods, right? Nazism to a degree has as well, albeit typically referred to as Neo-Nazism due to its similarly unfortunate survival and changing over time to be hateful in some other ways.

When others are criticizing conservative policies with these terms, it’s relating them to their current surviving form, not strictly to their older forms. They have a meaning and it is to racist, bigoted authoritarian policies, both in their older and modern forms. Would you insist that those adjectives are also devoid of meaning?

The far-right is obviously aware, but they’ve learned the importance of dodging labels.

Not too long ago, neo-nazis called themselves neo-nazis and consequently had almost no access to popular communication platforms. After all, the moment someone admits to being a Nazi, you know their political views are dogshit and their solutions immoral and ineffective.

Then, they announced they were now “the alt-right” and everything suddenly changed. Not their opinions, pundits and idols of course, but their access to communication.

That tiny bit of plausible deniability bought them space on platforms they had only dreamed of. They were allowed to build themselves little communities full of abusive scum on major social media sites. Some of them were even on television! It’s the furthest they’d ever been able to push their views before they were spat on.

By the time “Unite the Right” rolled around, they were feeling untouchable. They whipped off their masks, triumphantly declared “Ha! We were nazis all along!” and started marching around with tiki torches, chanting antisemetic catch phrases and waving Nazi flags. They even got to do a bit of domestic terrorism against innocent people.

But the fallout was huge. The platforms that had been coddling them and claiming “it’s important to hear all viewpoints” suddenly treated them like radioactive cups of asparagus piss.

The rebranding they’d worked so hard on was ruined. Everyone knew they were neo-nazis again, only discernible from the original National Socialists by the word “SJWs” scrawled in crayon at the bottom of their list of undesirables.

But they learned from that mistake. They learned to stay mask on and never, ever “reveal their powerlevel”, even as they wrote Mein Kamph fan fiction and attacked anyone who wasn’t straight, white and stupid.

Labels were to be avoided at all costs. If anyone asked, they were simply “conservatives”, perhaps even “centrists”. It was the social media equivalent of the Proud Boys in their khaki pants and white balaclavas, still fuming over the jobs, friends and family they lost when they went out without them.

Because without labels, they couldn’t be criticised. They’d used 1984 not as a warning, but as an inspiration. They had to control the language. The “alt-right” was not only dead, it had never existed at all.

And if people reverted to simply calling them “nazis” again, they had a catch phrase to use as a shield, parroted by scumbags and useful idiots alike.

“The left just call anyone who disagrees with them a Nazi”.

The meaning of nazi and fascist are so watered down, the terms are so overused, they only mean that the user of the term is a leftist upset with someone.

If you want to say something is bad, say why its bad instead of just saying nazi or fascist.

I realize the optics, but the quality of discussion is horrible right now. And the alternatives were just not good.

Going the “Conservatives only tag” route would have been anti-free speech, stifled discussion, and would only helped certain threads.

Going the “bad faith arguments” route would have a ton of trying to read minds, trying to figure out what is and isn’t bad faith, and that would also stifle discussion. Just a bad idea all around.

This way, its clear cut, and it might even promote discussion. Instead of saying “Hes a Nazi”, say “This is a problem because X reason”

I’d like for there to be a community where actual discussions of convervative issues and opinions could occur. Heck I think it would be great if there were a functional conservative party operating in the US, but we’re long past that ever being possible. Moderate conservatives are primaried out because they aren’t fascist enough. Best of luck, but I’ll block this community, in all likelihood some time in the near future, because at this point in the world when you put conservative as a label on a community it will be a dog whistle that attracts nazis, fascists, racists, etc. SMH.

I know exactly what it means. It means lefties want to genocide jews and hurt women, while accusing the right of not wanting that. Its a completely overused, abused, and misused term.

I’ve given everyone a better alternative, actually saying why its bad instead of just namecalling. If the terms still means something, surely you can spell out why you think conservatives are nazis, or why a policy is fascist. Hell, you can still say “this is 1940s Germany” if you want, I was very clear on it only being those two words.

The Hamas charter has nothing to do with leftism.

A ceasefire will result in the genocide of every non-muslim in Israel.

We shouldn’t worry about politicians basically quoting Hitler?

No, we shouldn’t worry about the rule.

So then you agree that we should be concerned about politicians saying things like 'My enemies are vermin, I will wipe them out’

Hell of a lot better than my “Conservatives Only” tag idea or banning bad faith arguments

Idk who argues in bad faith, but that’s a shitty thing to do.

The words Nazi and Fascist have no meaning. No one is referring to 1940s Germany or 1930s Italy. It’s just name-calling at this point.

I guess we can play this game of taboo. Poo by any other name smells just as bad.

So authoritarian and reminiscent of 1930’s Germany.
