You are correct that this is not his standard comic book style but it was definitely made by him. I snipped it myself from page 66, of the book Moebius - Metallic Memories, published by Epic Comics. His typical comic art often seems to be all about the perfect lines, while the colouring sometimes even looks like it was done posthaste and without too much care, especially when it´s a long story with a lot of panels to colour. The original colouring of The Incal is a good example for this. In parts the original colouring looks even so underwhelming that I have to admit to liking the newly coloured version by Valèrie Beltran better. Sure, the palette is less artsy but it still has the Moebius lines and at least the colours look clean and like they were done with devotion.

However, when he wants to, Moebius does amazing things with colours in several, distinct styles. This can be seen in a lot of his single pieces, posters and also his cover art. Here are a few examples from my earlier posts for you to enjoy (open in new tab to enlarge):

This was a super-interesting comment, and I’d love to see it turned in to its own post so that more people could see. I hadn’t really thought much about Moeby’s coloring before, but wow, things are a lot clearer now.

Maybe the post could be called something like “Moebius’ approach to coloring.” I’d certainly like to add it to the master index.

Thank you for the compliment but I am not sure if I know enough about his colouring techniques and also just about painting in general to properly write such a post. I would want to at least be able to properly name the kind of colours used in each picture and I openly admit, I am not. However, considering your practical experience in the arts, I could image writing such a post with your support.

Oh gosh, I’d love to do a ‘colab’ on that, altho it would have to be when I’m feeling better.

Still, though-- would it be okay then if I linked to your original comment as a simple “WIP” commentary about Moebius’ various use of colors?
It could be something we revisit in time, for example.

If no reply, I’ll just take it as: ‘maybe something for the future, no harm done.’

Great, let’s put it on our to do list :)

            But of course!
