WINNER: Buffy Fish Owl 39-23

The Long Eared Owl has a lot of what it takes to be popular here. It’s spread across much of the northern hemisphere, long ear tufts, orange eyes, and a wide variety of looks and expressions. For some reason, it’s never seemed to get as many upvotes as expected, so will this owl be able to pull out a win today?

On the other hand, the Buffy Fish Owl has just got a good response on a recent post. Though a relatively rare owl, being only found in the islands of Southeast Asia, this owl wins people over with it’s relaxed look and somewhat derpy expressions. Will it’s exoticness and subtle charm get the win today?

Upvote your favorite below, and check back in about an hour for the other match if the day, Hawk Owl vs Pygmy Owl!

That top photo is the sort of look you give someone when they’ve just said something very stupid and you’re trying not to laugh before they do, just in case they were being serious.

Ooo… We have our first reversal of the lead. Two hours in and Buffy grabs the lead that LEO had just been holding on to.

Still lots of time for LEO to make a comeback though!

Eh oui ! Même moi. Mais le choix était compliqué.

Generally, I’m calling hiboux the ones with a sharper face feature and longer body but I’m calling chouettes, the one with rounder face or body. This criteria is not perfect. Sometime, I see a picture of an unknown type of owl and I wonder “Is this a chouette or a hibou ?”.

          According to wikipédia :

le hibou, appelé aussi chat-huant, se distinguant de la chouette par la simple présence d’aigrettes, faites de plumes dépassant de la tête.

          Which translate into

the owl, also called hooting cat, are distinguished from the owl by the simple presence of egrets, made of feathers protruding from the head.

That makes sense. In Spanish búho seems to be any owl, but generally referring to the ones with egrets. Lechuza seems reserved for Barn Owls.

Hooting Cat is also a great name!

This is hard! They both look like cats.

If I was going by the photos in the main post, it would be the Long Eared Owl as that smug expression is so charming.

But over all, I think the gormless innocence and sheer beauty of the Buffy Fish Owl has won me over this round. Their apricot coloured plumage is very pretty too.

Yes, this is another tough pairing.

LEO I feel is terribly underrated in this group. Most of the fish owls do pretty well for likes, plus he just got posted this week, which probably helps with a less common owl.

Buffy just reminds me of that goofy friend or crazy uncle we all have. He has a different vibe about him than most owls.

Both of these guys are very cool in my book though. No wrong choice here whatsoever.

    derpy

I’m learning new words on each of my visit in this community.

I’m missed the first rounds but I’m hype by the contest.

If it’s not to late to vote, I’ll choose the Buffy Fish Owl. It looks more like the image I have of an owl but it is a close call 'cause I love animal that looks liked stuffed rabit (*_*)

You are not too late to vote on either of today’s contests. I’m letting them run for about 24 hours so everyone gets a decent opportunity to vote, since we have a fair number of Europeans and Australian and NZ people here. I pretty much post themand count ballots when I get up, but weekdays you’ll probably have a little more time since I have to get my work finished first. These posts take me a bit longer to do finding multiple good HD photos.

His floppy ears do remind me of a pet bunny. I had a pretty rabbit as a child, though I think I’m allergic to them now. I still pet them though, too soft and cute!

The word derp is said to have originated from the creators of South Park. It supposedly comes from their BASEketball movie, but probably got more popular being used on South Park.
