      Desalination requires lots of energy and leaves even saltier water as a waste.

      Gray water recovery has lots of potential. Areas of LA and Santa Monica use “reclaimed” water for irrigation. I’m not certain what they consider reclaimed but Santa Monica makes it clear the water should not be consumed.

      CA allows individuals to implement gray water systems without inspection (with several requirements). I don’t have a need in Oakland, additionally I’m slowly planting native plants that will thrive without any additional watering.

        Desalination is going to become necessary as fresh water becomes more scarce. Especially in states that require irrigation for food crops. Water is going to become the new oil, so we might as well get started figuring out desalination now, instead of scrambling when it’s the only option left.
