If NATO had not tried to expand into Ukraine, Ukraine could have kept Crimea. There was no way a state like Russia would allow itself to be militarily boxed in and essentially zoned out of the Black Sea by having NATO come and take over Crimea and build its military bases there.
Prior to 1997 they were boxed out of the black sea… The partition treaty is what split the black fleet in half and gave them access to Sevastopol in the first place. That only lasted a couple years before Russia raised another territorial dispute, even when they had already signed treaties guaranteeing that their borders were inviolable.
Ukraine profited from this arrangement by the way, only a NATO puppet regime in Kiev would do something so detrimental to the people of Ukraine as to provoke a Russian intervention by threatening to give the Crimean base to NATO.
You mean Russians profited? Ukrainians received 97m dollars in annual fuel discounts. Not exactly a steep price for access to the black sea and the ability to transport your only real valuable export. Coupled with the fact that Russia has a history of ignoring it’s own territorial treaties, Russia also began utilizing the cost of gas to influence ukrainian politics. So it’s not exactly surprising that they wanted to end the lease.
The Crimean peninsula was was under the USSR prior to the formation of the Russian Federation. It was only gifted to Ukraine in the 1950s for internal administrative reasons. The USSR wanting to reorganize its internal borders again is not “territorial expansion”.
Ukraine gained independence in 91. The Russian parliament wasn’t formed until 93.
set in stone as the borders of sovereign states? Why not the borders of the Soviet Republics in 1922 for instance when the whole Transcaucasus was under one SFSR? Crimea was and is a majority Russian speaking territory. Hardly any Ukrainian speakers lived there. Turkey has more historical claim on Crimea than Ukraine does.
It’s almost if international law is set up on precedent and context? Why doesn’t the vast majority of Russia belong to Mongolians and Turks?
Russia had been protesting NATO expansion ever since NATO took the Baltic states and turned them into anti-Russia military outposts. They protested the second round of NATO expansion as well and warned that if this aggressive behavior continued it would lead to conflict.
Perhaps maybe the Russian government has something to do with Baltic countries wanting to join NATO? Did NATO have anything to do with the war in the Abkhazia, or the chechia?
was the 2008 Bucharest conference where NATO declared intentions to expand into Georgia and Ukraine.
Ahh, so backing an armed separatist group to declare independence is crossing a line…? Almost like Kosovo was a tit for tat reaction to Abkhazia… It’s almost like we’re watching two empires attempting to divide Europe into different economic zones…
Russia warned again and again that such an expansion would be a red line as such an encirclement constitutes an existential threat to the survival of the Russian state.
Ahh yes, I forgot you could encircle the largest country on the planet by …checks notes, allowing two small countries to enter a defense pact.
Which is why we also point to the civil war that had been ongoing in Ukraine since 2014, the refusal of Kiev and the West to adhere to the Minsk agreements
Ahh yes, when kiev rejects Russian influence it’s a color revolution. When donbos rejects the west it’s a completely legitimate independence movement… It’s not like Russia has a history of subverting local interconflict into armed independence movements or anything.
the constant bombing of civilians in the Donbass, the preparation of ethnic cleansing of Russians by the Nazi regime in Kiev
Lol, how many civilian deaths have happened in Ukraine, and How many were done by ukrainians? Also, the whole Nazi thing is just a fabrication of propaganda. There are of course Nazi fighting in Ukraine, but to believe that’s part of the reason they invaded is absurd. Especially considering Russia has an entire unit of neo Nazi in their pmc.
At every turn it has been made clear to Russia that NATO has hostile intentions toward it and that Ukraine post 2014 has been transformed into an instrument by which these would be carried out.
Ahh yes, NATOs hostile intentions is to trick Russia into invading their neighbors, loosing the teeth of its military to the poorest country in Europe?
socialist nation would not and could not have acted any differently than Russia did. In fact had Russia been socialist they would have already militarily intervened to stop the Nazi coup in 2014. Capitalist Russia waited too long.
So I guess Lenin’s theory of imperialism is wrong then? I guess normally when capitalist countries create monopolistic corporations attached to oligarchic finance systems they create surplus capital from exports that get reinvested into imperialism…but I guess not when Russia does it?
What’s more likely, that two reactionary forces are jousting for economic control? Or that Russia has disproved lenins work on imperialism, and have just been so happened to never be responsible for it’s actions?
