This documentary film was released on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the events that took place at the time and after the peaceful demonstration of the Algerians on 17 October 1961 in Paris during the Algerian War

If those events are what you’re talking about then surely there’s something more recent that’s still notable? Why go so far back

It’s indeed just one example of many, for something more recently you can look at the murder of Nahel Merzouk in 2023. But the horror of the police just murdering more than 300 peaceful protesters and it still being so controversial that the only memorial on the bridge is the occasional graffiti, is on another level.

To add to the sheer number of deaths, the way the police prepared, the specific method of torture and murder (throwing people of a bridge after breaking their arms and legs (this includes children) hence the quote “Algerians are drowned here”), and the thorough cover up after, defy imagination.

This crime and its cover up has still not been dealt with in France even if it was 50 years ago.
