I miss the days of when our biggest concern was when W would say something and we collectively said, “dafuq did he just say?!” But then we continued on with our day.

Didn’t he torture people and found an agency that fingers your asshole when you fly?

I naively thought Obama would address that

Bro I was piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised when he said

I thank President Bush for his service to our Nation

instead of charging him for warcrimes.

It was the Obama presidency that completely disillusioned me of making any real change via election. I wish I could explain how much I poured my heart into campaigning for Obama in 08. The progressive who campaigned was not the same as the conservative we got in office.

I realize it’s better than the alternative, and we did see some small progress for LGBTQ+ rights and the tiniest glimmer of hope in DACA, but nothing that could gloss over the many atrocities he signed off on.

Yep. In 2003 when the whole torture program became a public discussion, it started this deep dive for me:

And then my dad started saying torture was acceptable and waterboarding isn’t really torture because Donald Rumsfeld says so. And my only argument at the time was that the princess is tortured by the Galactic Empire (specifically by Darth Vader) to show that it is super evil and needs its Death Star blown up.

Twenty years later I’m fairly well read in moral philosophy, but also know my dad has gone full MAGA and wouldn’t have cared if I could explain why torture is wrong.

More seldom than not, the movies gives us exquisite sex and wholesome violence, that underscores our values. Every two child did. I will.
