It would make sense to compare 15 flatpaks to 15 AppImages since the benefit of the runtime model and dedupping only really kicks in with more than one package. People get upset about the size of one package, which I get, but I don’t think people often use it for just a single program. At that point AppImage might be a better option.

And let’s be honest, the extra space use you get from flatpak with a load of flatpaks is going to be some gigs, which really doesn’t matter much to most people these days. The extra space use on my system with 50 flatpaks is around 4 gigs. Not a whole lot imo. Even on my older lappy that’s less than 2% of the disk use.

have 163 Flatpak apps on my Endless OS system.

I have 18 runtimes, totalling 8.7 GB of storage (deduplicated), not “tens of gigabytes”. The top 5 most-used runtimes on my system cover 128 of the 163 apps.

The whole article is pretty interesting https://blogs.gnome.org/wjjt/2021/11/24/on-flatpak-disk-usage-and-deduplication/
