As with most #GOP culture war bullshit, there is a kernel of truth to this. Yes, the USA had white indentured servants. No, it was not chattel slavery like the Africans that were enslaved in for hundred of years. It’s very obvious that the #fascist Ron DeSantis is trying to conflate the two.

There were white settlers who paid for their trip to the new world with indenture once they got there, but indenture was not slavery, and every single indentured servant worked for a white man.

Then in 1619, the Portuguese sold a bunch of African slaves to Jamestown. At first, these Africans were treated like any other indenture, paid a wage to pay off their debt. The main difference was that the debt incurred by the Africans was involuntary.

It was some time in the 1680s when the white business owners decided that no, they weren’t going to pretend anymore, and made race based slavery the name of the game.

As to this chucklefuck’s claims of black slave owners in the Antebellum South. No. just no.

not to equate things as the arent equal, but indentured servitude was a thing as well as debt servitude among other similar things. Those things were similar to slavery except they (in theory) had an end. Now we know how things work in reality and it seems fair to assume some indentured servants never actually got out of it due to various grift. whites could definately end up as indentured servants.

Well, the way this guy looks makes it very easy to imagine him on a black and white portrait photo in a uniform with cute little skulls on the collar.

I’m guessing indentured servitude. The funny thing is this should backfire by showing how racism doesn’t stop. Once they get one group, they will go to the next. All those Italian, Irish, Catholic, etc white supremacists should take a look at history.
