Pokémon Go relies heavily on Openstreetmap for controlling what types of Pokemon spawn and where.
A recently added pokémon spawns in “beach” areas. Some users may place fake beaches near areas they frequent.
That being said, I would also expect to see a boost in legitimate beaches being added on to the maps now.
To be fair, there are far more people that got into updating maps in their local area because of Pokemon Go. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/334378297_How_an_augmented_reality_game_Pokemon_GO_affected_volunteer_contributions_to_OpenStreetMap
We can still have nice things, there are a few bad apples that we just need to look out for.
