Pokémon Go relies heavily on Openstreetmap for controlling what types of Pokemon spawn and where.
A recently added pokémon spawns in “beach” areas. Some users may place fake beaches near areas they frequent.
That being said, I would also expect to see a boost in legitimate beaches being added on to the maps now.

Edit: To clarify, people corrupting free and open datasets to cheat at a mobile game, without regard to others using the dataset is an example of why we can’t have nice things.

We can still have nice things, there are a few bad apples that we just need to look out for.
