Everything I’ve heard about patriarchy in SK makes it sound like absolute hell. What’s that maybe exists maybe not movement where women are essentially doing 70s feminist secession from men? I’ve heard a bit about it and some of the interviews with women about the shit they go through are harrowing.

One notable feature of the 4B movement, as with other Korean digital feminist movements, is that members often identify themselves as “anonymous women,” as it is conventional not to disclose personal details online.[

Korea “fem-anon” language to distinguish from just “anon” (assumed male) amuses me.

Tbf, the reason we hear about it more in South Korea is because women are gaining more political and economic control in the country. Historically Korea has been a bit ahead of other East Asian countries when it comes to feminism, with the first official organization being formed in the 1890s. Which was unfortunately one of the first casualties when Japan invaded and brought about a wave of neo-confucianism.

Misogyny is pretty prevalent in the east anywhere Confucianism was culturally important. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really seem to be influenced much by any particular economic system. China has a slightly larger wage gap between genders, and about the same amount of political representation in their government.
