I’m all for privacy, and encryption should be mandatory, but the issue in the article is twofold.

<…> but also allegedly failing to report all the CSAM that is flagged.

Authorities demand back doors for platforms instead of doing their jobs so that they can spy on and trample the rights of political enemies and creep on people in their communities.

The tools for authorities to stop perpetrators without trampling on our rights are there but that doesn’t let them abuse their power.

As important as this issue is, maybe the government should also fix the entire reporting process so it actually worked correctly https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/ap-top-news/2024/04/22/report-urges-fixes-to-online-child-exploitation-cybertipline-before-ai-makes-it-worse

The CyberTipline reporting form doesn’t have a dedicated field for submitting chat-related material, such as sextortion messaging. The FBI recently warned of a “huge increase” in sextortion cases targeting children — including financial sextortion, where someone threatens to release compromising images unless the victim pays.
